GIVE YOUR INPUT ON THE MURAL PROJECT

Which animals, birds, fishes, amphibians, bugs and critters should be a part of the waterfront mural?

The gate openings will be painted to look like ornamental metal as a nod to the metalworking industries of the past - any favorite icons you would like to see included as ironwork?

Do you have a personal story to share about the Ohio or the area ? Theme: LOST COMMUNITIES OF LOUISVILLE or OHIO RIVER STORIES. Shippingport? Fishing on the Ohio? Flood stories? Or the businesses in the area? Foundries? Walnut Street? What is your story?

This mural is sponsored by a cooperative group consisting of Louisville Metro's COPA (Commission On Public Art), The Waterfront Development Corporation,  and Metropolitan Sewer District.

How we are bringing extea experiences and history to the project:

THE MURAL PAINTING
The majority of the mural is a modern landscape painting depicting the geography of the park - as if there were no buildings or people. The Ohio River runs through all scenes, symbolic of the tie that unites all Louisvillians.

  • Shippingport Island
  • Old Walnut Street Business District
  • with nods to other special places.
 in addition
  • Under the gate is below the surface: under the river and archaeological layers
  • AR is added to enhance the experience.
  • A relief map installed on site for vision impaired park goers.
  • Crank style audio box installed with oral histories placed around the mural area

THE 2 INFORMATION WALLS

  • On the right wall are the history of flooding, the 1937 flood and the building of flood wall system.

 Frankfort Ave Mural

This project, a reinterpretation in paint of a digital mixed media piece from my series of work: #KentuckyTheBeautiful.
The opportunity to create at this scale was a dream. The pandemic changed my routine, so I capitalized on the large stretch of time needed to hand paint a 500 square foot mural.
No stencil, no projection, no spray. The conditions called for hand drawing and painting.

Bardstown Road Mural

Painted  in a similar manner, this was started at the end of pandemic shut down. Many of us felt timid to reemerge. This street scene denotes a feeling of being able to gather without worry, something we all deserve to experience.
